How long does it take for an applicant to receive a Smart ID Card?

14 +- working days from date of application provided it is a straight forward application meeting all the requirements.

How much will I pay for Smart ID?

The Smart ID Card will be issued free to the 16 year-olds who are first time applicants and senior citizens 60 years and older.
All other Smart ID Card applicants will be expected to pay R140.00

How many photos am I expected to bring for a Smart Card and passport application?

There will be no need for applicants to bring photos. These are taken digitally at the branch visit.

Will Smart ID Cards be delivered to applicants’ residential addresses?

The Smart ID cards will be printed at a secure location and be delivered to the branch office of application. Applicants will have to present themselves at these branch offices to collect the card.

What happens if you lose the ID after you have applied for a Smart ID Card?

You will have to provide a police stamped affidavit, and apply for a new smart ID.

What types of passports are available?

- Adult Tourist Passport (10-year validity)
- Child Passport (5-year validity)
- Maxi Passport (more pages, 10-year validity)
- Official & Diplomatic Passports (for government use)

What documents do I need to apply for a passport?

- Valid South African ID or birth certificate
- Proof of address (if requested)
- Passport application fee
- If renewing: your current or expired passport

How long does it take for an applicant to recieve a passport

- In South Africa: 7–15 working days from date of biometric appointment

How much does a South African passport cost and is it refundable?

- Adult Passport: R600
- Maxi Passport: R1200
- Child Passport: R600

Is the fee refundable? No. Once paid and biometrics are submitted, the fee is non-refundable.

What if my passport is lost or stolen?
